Beetles are among the oldest and most fascinating creatures on Earth. Their iridescent shell looks almost like a precious stone and has always led people to see more in them than just a small insect. In mythology, beetles appear time and again as guardians of treasure, talismans, and symbols of rebirth. In ancient Egypt, Khepri, the god of the rising sun, was depicted as a man with the head of a scarab. The connection between the beetle and the sun arose from a simple observation. Dung beetles roll balls of dung across the ground and subsequently bury them. Young beetles later hatch from these balls—seemingly out of nowhere. For the ancient Egyptians, this mysterious process became a symbol of creation and rebirth. The movement of the beetle rolling its ball in front of it was simultaneously linked to the sun’s daily journey across the sky.For our research, we explored the extensive entomological collection of ETH Zurich, which houses around two million insect specimens. We were fascinated by the incredible visual diversity we encountered in the world of beetles. With "Iridescence," we turn our gaze to the beetle as one of nature’s little jewels. What appears at first glance to be merely a shell, reveals upon closer inspection a world of color, structure, history, and meaning. Succulents often look like small sculptures. However, their thick leaves, stems, and unusual shapes are not merely aesthetic; they are the result of an amazing adaptation to extreme habitats.Over long periods of time, succulents have adapted to heat, intense sunlight, and long dry spells. Where water is rarely available, they store it in their leaves or roots. Some species can thus survive for months on the water they absorbed during short periods of rainfall. What appears calm and almost static from the outside is, on the inside, an ingenious water storage system. The plants themselves become small reservoirs – silent oases in a dry landscape."Quiet Water" showcases this hidden side of succulents: plants whose fascinating forms arise directly from their ability to collect, retain, and use water as sparingly as possible. Hardly any other animal combines beauty and vulnerability as directly as the butterfly. Since antiquity, we have been fascinated by its astonishing transformation: a caterpillar becomes a seemingly lifeless chrysalis, from which a completely different being finally emerges. What happens inside during this time remains hidden from our view. In many cultures, this metamorphosis has therefore become a symbol of rebirth and change.Yet behind their delicate appearance lies a complex life. Butterflies are closely linked to plants: many caterpillars depend on very specific plants, while the adult insects visit flowers and contribute to pollination in the process. They are thus part of a vast ecological network. It is precisely this dependency that makes them sensitive to change. Habitat loss, intensive agriculture, and climate change are putting pressure on many species. As temperatures and living conditions change, their distribution ranges can also shift. If the plant a caterpillar needs to survive disappears, the butterfly often disappears as well. Their beauty is therefore inseparable from the landscape in which they live."Sun Fluttering" shows butterflies in their extraordinary diversity – as fascinating creatures of transformation and as part of a sensitive natural system. From the outside, they may look like ordinary stones. Only a cut reveals what has been hidden inside for millions of years: layers of minerals, vibrant colors, fine lines, and sometimes entire crystal landscapes. A stone can contain an entire world within it.Many of these structures form in cavities within the rock. Mineral-rich fluids penetrate small cracks and voids, depositing new minerals layer by layer over a long period of time. This is how the characteristic bands and patterns of agates are formed. The shapes and colors that develop depend, among other things, on the composition of the minerals and the conditions during their formation. It is only through cutting and polishing that this hidden world becomes visible. Each cross-section tells its own geological story. Sometimes it is reminiscent of a landscape, other times of an abstract drawing."Mountain Treasures" showcases these hidden inner worlds: images created from minerals, water, and time, shaped by the slow forces of the earth. In Lake Tai near Suzhou in China, one can find stones of extraordinary shape: perforated, rugged, and with bizarre silhouettes. Over long periods of time, they were shaped by the power of water and erosion into small sculptures of nature. Some resemble mountains, animals, or human figures, while others leave plenty of room for one's own imagination. In Chinese, these special stones are called "Gongshi." They were traditionally collected by scholars and placed on desks, indoors, and in gardens. The focus was not only on their material value, but on the conscious observation of their forms and the thoughts they evoke.Since the Ming Dynasty, viewing stones have been a part of this Chinese tradition of collecting and contemplation. To this day, they are cherished as precious collector's items and meditation stones. "Viewing Stones" presents these works of natural art as an invitation to take your time and sink into your own thoughts for a moment. We were immediately fascinated when we discovered these remarkable pieces of deadwood on a beach in New Zealand. Their unusual surfaces and sculptural forms seem almost like works of art created by nature. But there is more to these intriguing shapes than the visible remains of a tree; they are part of a living ecosystem.Deadwood is anything but "dead." As soon as a tree dies, a new chapter in the natural cycle begins. Fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, and numerous insect species use the wood as a habitat. They leave traces, drill tunnels, and alter its surface. As the wood slowly decomposes, nutrients are released back into the soil. This creates a complex network of interrelationships that contributes significantly to biodiversity.Deadwood also plays an important role in forest regeneration. It can store moisture, gradually release nutrients, and create protected conditions where young plants can grow. Especially during dry periods, the stored water can be valuable for the forest and its inhabitants.Virtues of Wood presents deadwood as fascinating sculptures of nature and as an essential part of the natural cycle. What looks like the end of a tree is in reality a place where life continues, transforms, and begins anew. They seem like small creatures from an alien world: mysterious, enigmatic, and at first glance barely recognizable for what they are. Seeds.Magnified, they reveal a world that usually remains hidden. Fine structures, unusual shapes, and surfaces that are more reminiscent of small sculptures than the beginning of a plant. Yet these tiny forms already carry within them the potential for something incomparably larger. Under the right conditions, a plant begins to grow from a seed: a flower, a shrub, or perhaps a massive tree that will endure for decades or even centuries. For "Origins," we photographed seeds from the collection of Jonas Frei of Atelier Foifacht. Through extreme magnification, they become independent forms and reveal an aesthetic that is easily overlooked in everyday life."Origins" shows the beginning of something great in its smallest form: seeds as mysterious objects and as the starting point for new life. Small enough to hold in your hand, yet with the potential to produce something that can outlast generations. When it gets dark, the leaves of so-called prayer plants begin to move. They fold upward, sometimes pressing together so closely that they resemble folded hands. With the first light of morning, they open up again. This daily movement follows the plants' natural rhythm. The best-known prayer plants belong to the Marantaceae family, which originally comes from the tropical regions of America. Their leaves are adorned with fine lines, dots, and geometric designs. Patterns that look almost designed rather than grown.Depending on the species, very different combinations of deep greens, light areas, and delicate leaf veins emerge. The appearance of these patterns changes as light and shadow shift. Each leaf seems like its own graphic image, almost hand-drawn and with a completely individual structure."Praying Hands" focuses on this unusual combination of movement and pattern: plants whose leaves close every evening and open again every morning. A quiet, daily recurring movement that gave them their name. Anyone seeing these stones for the first time might think they were man-made works of art. The round openings are too regular, their shapes too precise. Yet no human created them; they are the work of mollusks.Piddocks bore into soft rock, creating their own chambers inside. Using their ribbed shells, they rasp away the stone, working their way deeper and deeper into it. This results in small, precisely crafted sculptures that look as if they were man-made.When the mollusks move on, their boreholes remain in the rock. The soft stone is surprisingly light and fragile. Even slight pressure can cause the delicate forms to break. Our stones come from a beach in Bolinas, California. Their unusual lightness became the starting point for our interpretation. For "Pacific Marks," we documented them and staged them photographically so that they appear to float freely above the paper. Nature repeats its forms again and again, in very different contexts. A marble pattern can call to mind snow-capped mountains, melting glaciers, waves, or vast landscapes. At the same time, it could also appear like a highly magnified structure that is only visible under a microscope. These similarities are more than a coincidence. Branches, lines, and organic patterns appear time and again – in landscapes, water, ice, plants, or tiny structures. What seems familiar to us at a certain scale can suddenly reappear at an entirely different one.Marble makes this visual kinship particularly striking. Its patterns are created over millions of years through pressure, heat, and the combination of various minerals. In the process, forms emerge within the stone that surprisingly often resemble images from entirely different parts of nature.Perhaps this is exactly why marble has fascinated people for so long. It has been used for sculpture and architecture since the Bronze Age."Black Reflection," however, does not focus on what has been made out of marble, but on what the stone itself reveals: patterns that recall forms and structures from very different worlds – from vast landscapes to microscopic realms. It has been used for sculpture and architecture since the Bronze Age."Black Reflection," however, does not direct its gaze toward what has been made out of marble, but rather at what the stone itself reveals: patterns that recall forms and structures from widely differing worlds—from grand landscapes to microscopically small realms. Nature repeats its forms time and again, in entirely different contexts. A marble pattern can call to mind snow-covered mountains, melting glaciers, waves, or vast landscapes. At the same time, it could also appear like a highly magnified structure that is only visible under a microscope. These similarities are more than a coincidence. Branches, lines, and organic patterns appear again and again—in landscapes, water, ice, plants, or tiny structures. What seems familiar to us at a certain scale can suddenly reappear on a completely different one.Marble makes this visual kinship particularly striking. Its patterns are created over millions of years through pressure, heat, and the combination of various minerals. In the process, forms emerge within the stone that surprisingly often resemble images from completely different parts of nature.Perhaps that is precisely the reason why marble has fascinated people for such a long time. Over 1,000 years ago in China, goldfish began to be bred specifically for their appearance. Over generations, increasingly unusual shapes and colors emerged. Fish that were initially kept primarily for food became creatures of extraordinary form.During the Ming Dynasty, this breeding continued to evolve. Particularly coveted were forms with long, flowing fins, heavily rounded bodies, striking eyes, and ever more unusual proportions. Some of these fish had silhouettes that resembled blossoms and were therefore poetically referred to as "peonies in the water."Their beauty lies not in classical perfection, but precisely in something fragile, alien, and almost morbid. Their slow movements, exaggerated forms, and seemingly weightless bodies give them a peculiar, almost surreal effect. To this day, goldfish hold a special cultural significance in China and are considered, among other things, a symbol of luck, prosperity, and beauty. Over the centuries, this resulted in bred forms that exist between natural shape and human imagination. "Morbid Being" turns its gaze to this unusual aesthetic. According to a Chinese legend, a monk prayed by a river for years with great sincerity and devotion. A god was so impressed by this that he let thousands of colorful flowers rain down from the sky. When they touched the ground, they turned into glowing stones. The so-called riverstones or "Yuhua Stones" are actually only found in a limited area along the Yangtze River near Nanjing. Over a long period of time, they are moved, abraded, and polished by the flowing water. In the process, their different colors, layers, and fine structures emerge more and more clearly. Many of the stones display natural patterns that resemble small landscapes: mountains, watercourses, clouds, or abstract shapes. For centuries, people have observed and collected these stones, continually discovering new images in their markings. No two stones are alike."Riverstones" showcases these fascinating river stones, shaped by water, marked by time. Each one carries its own landscape within it, which only comes to life in the eye of the beholder.   Art print in A3 format, 297 × 420 mm Risograph print in Zurich, Switzerland Lessebo natural paper, 200 g/m² Cradle to Cradle Certified® & FSC®-certified paper Limited edition: 200 copies Swiss Made Concept & Design: Bienvenue Studios
