Card Set No. 17 – Praying Hands

When it gets dark, the leaves of so-called prayer plants begin to move. They fold upwards and sometimes press together so closely that they resemble folded hands. With the first light of morning, they open again.

This daily movement follows the natural rhythm of the plants. The best-known prayer plants belong to the Marantaceae family, which originally comes from the tropical regions of the Americas. Their leaves are adorned with fine lines, dots, and geometric designs – patterns that seem almost designed rather than grown.

Depending on the species, very different combinations of deep green tones, light areas, and delicate leaf veins emerge. The appearance of these patterns shifts in the play of light and shadow. Each leaf appears as its own graphic image, almost hand-drawn and with a completely individual structure.

«Praying Hands» focuses on this unusual connection between movement and pattern: plants whose leaves close every evening and open again every morning. A quiet, daily recurring movement that gave them their name.
