Beetles are among the oldest and most fascinating creatures on Earth. Their iridescent shell looks almost like a precious stone and has always led people to see more in them than just a small insect. In mythology, beetles appear time and again as guardians of treasure, talismans, and symbols of rebirth. In ancient Egypt, Khepri, the god of the rising sun, was depicted as a man with the head of a scarab. The connection between the beetle and the sun arose from a simple observation. Dung beetles roll balls of dung across the ground and subsequently bury them. Young beetles later hatch from these balls—seemingly out of nowhere. For the ancient Egyptians, this mysterious process became a symbol of creation and rebirth. The movement of the beetle rolling its ball in front of it was simultaneously linked to the sun’s daily journey across the sky.For our research, we explored the extensive entomological collection of ETH Zurich, which houses around two million insect specimens. We were fascinated by the incredible visual diversity we encountered in the world of beetles. With "Iridescence," we turn our gaze to the beetle as one of nature’s little jewels. What appears at first glance to be merely a shell, reveals upon closer inspection a world of color, structure, history, and meaning. Succulents often look like small sculptures. However, their thick leaves, stems, and unusual shapes are not merely aesthetic; they are the result of an amazing adaptation to extreme habitats.Over long periods of time, succulents have adapted to heat, intense sunlight, and long dry spells. Where water is rarely available, they store it in their leaves or roots. Some species can thus survive for months on the water they absorbed during short periods of rainfall. What appears calm and almost static from the outside is, on the inside, an ingenious water storage system. The plants themselves become small reservoirs – silent oases in a dry landscape."Quiet Water" showcases this hidden side of succulents: plants whose fascinating forms arise directly from their ability to collect, retain, and use water as sparingly as possible. Over 1,000 years ago, people in China began selectively breeding goldfish for their appearance. Over generations, increasingly unusual shapes and colors emerged. Fish that were initially kept primarily as food became animals of extraordinary form.During the Ming Dynasty, breeding continued to evolve. Particularly coveted were forms with long, flowing fins, highly rounded bodies, striking eyes, and increasingly unusual proportions. Some of these fish had silhouettes that resembled blossoms and were therefore poetically referred to as "peonies in the water."Their beauty lies not in classical perfection, but precisely in something fragile, alien, and almost morbid. Their slow movements, exaggerated shapes, and seemingly weightless bodies give them a peculiar, almost surreal effect. To this day, goldfish hold a special cultural significance in China and are considered, among other things, a symbol of luck, prosperity, and beauty. Over the centuries, breeding forms have emerged that lie between natural shape and human imagination. "Morbid Being" directs its gaze toward this unusual aesthetic. When it gets dark, the leaves of so-called prayer plants begin to move. They fold upward, sometimes pressing so closely together that they resemble folded hands. With the first light of morning, they open up again. This daily movement follows the plants' natural rhythm. The best-known prayer plants belong to the Marantaceae family, which originally comes from the tropical regions of the Americas. Their leaves are adorned with fine lines, dots, and geometric designs—patterns that seem almost designed rather than grown.Depending on the species, a wide variety of combinations of deep green tones, light areas, and delicate leaf veins emerge. In the interplay of light and shadow, the appearance of these designs changes. Each leaf acts like an individual graphic image, almost hand-drawn and with a highly distinct structure."Praying Hands" focuses on this unusual connection between movement and pattern: plants whose leaves close every evening and open again every morning. A quiet, daily recurring movement that gave them their name. In Lake Tai near Suzhou in China, one can find stones of extraordinary shape: perforated, rugged, and with bizarre silhouettes. Over long periods of time, they were formed by the power of water and erosion into small sculptures of nature. Some resemble mountains, animals, or human figures, while others leave plenty of room for one’s own imagination. In Chinese, these special stones are called "Gongshi." They were traditionally collected by scholars and placed on desks, in interiors, and in gardens. This was not just about their material value, but about the conscious contemplation of their forms and the thoughts they trigger.Since the Ming Dynasty, viewing stones have been part of this Chinese tradition of collecting and contemplation. To this day, they are prized as precious collector's items and meditation stones. "Viewing Stones" presents these works of natural art as an invitation to take some time and sink into one’s own thoughts for a moment. According to a Chinese legend, a monk prayed by a river for years with great sincerity and devotion. A god was so impressed by this that he let thousands of colorful flowers rain down from the sky. When they touched the ground, they turned into glowing stones. The so-called riverstones or "Yuhua Stones" are actually only found in a limited area along the Yangtze River near Nanjing. Over a long period of time, they are moved, abraded, and polished by the flowing water. In the process, their different colors, layers, and fine structures emerge more and more clearly. Many of the stones display natural patterns that resemble small landscapes: mountains, watercourses, clouds, or abstract shapes. For centuries, people have observed and collected these stones, continually discovering new images in their markings. No two stones are alike."Riverstones" showcases these fascinating river stones, shaped by water, marked by time. Each one carries its own landscape within it, which only comes to life in the eye of the beholder.   Art print in A3 format, 297 × 420 mm Risograph print in Zurich, Switzerland Lessebo natural paper, 200 g/m² Cradle to Cradle Certified® & FSC®-certified paper Limited edition: 200 copies Swiss Made Concept & Design: Bienvenue Studios
