Card Set N° 19 – Fire Flowers

Proteas are among the oldest flowering plants on Earth. Their history dates back around 90 million years, to the time of the supercontinent Gondwana.

Many species grow in regions where fire is a natural part of the landscape's cycle. What spells the end for other plants can be a beginning for Proteas: some species store their seeds in woody seed heads that only open through the heat of a bushfire. After the fire, the seeds fall onto the nutrient-rich ash and begin a new cycle.

Their unusual blooms look almost like small fireworks. Yet behind their spectacular appearance lies an amazing adaptation to a world in which destruction and new life are closely intertwined.

With this Small Print Collection, we have examined the Protea as a botanical image between blossom, fire, and rebirth.
