Card Set No. 14 – Moon Fluttering

When night falls, the time of the moths begins. Many species navigate by natural light, using the moon and stars as orientation aids. Some cover astonishingly long distances in the process.

But our nights are becoming ever brighter. Streetlights, shop windows, and illuminated buildings alter the natural darkness and can severely disrupt the behavior of moths. They are attracted to artificial light sources, lose their orientation, and expend valuable energy.

Yet moths are important inhabitants of our ecosystems. Many species pollinate plants, while others are an essential food source for birds, bats, and other animals. Together with butterflies, they form an exceptionally diverse group: worldwide, more than 160,000 species of butterflies and moths have been described.

"Moon Fluttering" is dedicated to this fascinating world of the night and the special beauty of a darkness that is not empty, but full of life.
