Card Set N° 12 – Leaves of Friendship

When the French botanist Charles Plumier studied begonias in the rainforests of South America around 1690, he discovered an extraordinary variety of shapes and colors. He named the genus after his friend Michel Bégon, a French naval officer and passionate plant lover.

From this personal connection came not only the name "Begonia," but also the idea of the plant as a symbol of friendship, reliability, and loyalty.

Today, more than 2,000 begonia species are known. Some have strikingly colored flowers, while others are cultivated primarily for their leaves. Their often asymmetrical leaf shape is particularly characteristic – hardly any two leaves are exactly the same.

"Leaves of Friendship" is dedicated to this extraordinary genus and its small botanical history: a plant whose name still serves as a reminder of a friendship today.
