Card Set No. 10 – Pacific Settler

For thousands of years, shells have fascinated humankind. Their extraordinary shapes, colors, and patterns made their shells coveted jewelry, tools, and even currency, long before people knew how astonishing the animals that produce them really are.

There are mollusks that build their own homes. Piddocks have developed the ability to bore into rock. As tiny creatures, they settle in small cracks and depressions. Using their corrugated shells, they wear the rock away bit by bit, growing deeper and deeper into the cave they have created themselves.

What results is astonishing: perfectly round openings, hollows, and finely shaped interiors. A small animal not only creates a safe place to live in this way, but also leaves its mark on its immediate surroundings.

“Pacific Settler” showcases the fascinating diversity of shells – from extraordinary shell shapes to fine patterns and structures, all the way to the varied lifestyles of these creatures. Each species has developed its own form and is adapted to its environment in a special way.
