A stone that breaks can develop a sharp edge. For our early ancestors, this simple property of natural stone became a crucial discovery. Through intentional striking, tools were created for cutting, scraping, and working with materials.
The oldest known stone tools are about 2.6 million years old and mark an important milestone in the development of human technology. Rocks such as quartzite, rhyolite, and later also flint were specifically selected and worked because of their hardness and their ability to form sharp edges.
Human intervention turned a natural material into something new: a tool. What seems simple today was an extraordinary moment in human history – the discovery that a natural material could be purposefully altered to create something new. From this simple idea, an increasingly sophisticated form of making and inventing developed over generations. Stone tools changed people's everyday lives and laid an important foundation for the development of more complex cultures.
"Paleolithic" presents these early stone tools as a fascinating combination of natural material and human design – and as a reminder of how far back the history of conscious making reaches.
