Beetles are among the oldest and most fascinating creatures on Earth. Their iridescent shells look almost like precious gemstones and have always led humans to see more in them than just a small insect. In mythology, beetles appear time and again as guardians of treasure, talismans, and symbols of rebirth. In ancient Egypt, Khepri, the god of the rising sun, was depicted as a man with the head of a scarab. The connection between the beetle and the sun arose from a simple observation. Dung beetles roll balls of dung across the ground and then bury them. Young beetles later emerge from these balls – seemingly out of nowhere. For the ancient Egyptians, this mysterious process became a symbol of creation and rebirth. The movement of the beetle, rolling its ball before it, was simultaneously associated with the daily journey of the sun across the sky.For our research, we explored the extensive entomological collection at ETH Zurich, where around two million insect specimens are housed. We were fascinated by the incredible visual diversity we encountered in the world of beetles. With "Iridescence," we turn our gaze to the beetle as one of nature's small jewels. What at first glance appears to be merely a shell reveals, upon closer inspection, a world of color, structure, history, and meaning. The large-format, limited-edition art prints are screen-printed by hand in Zurich. In 2023, we were invited by Studio@Ding to a residency at their bonsai collection in Suzhou, China. During this stay, the idea for this limited art print was born, depicting a bonsai from an unusual perspective: from above. From this top-down view, branches and boughs become visible that are otherwise hidden in the dense foliage. The curved lines and clearly defined shapes are the result of decades of care. Through regular pruning and targeted restriction, the tree's growth is guided and its characteristic form is maintained. The bonsai thus uniquely illustrates how natural growth and human design intertwine. The tree grows under its own power, while humans intervene time and again, allowing certain branches to grow while removing others, thereby shaping the form over many years. This creates a delicate balance between control and growth.Engaging with the bonsai collection in Suzhou has sharpened our perspective on this relationship between human and nature. We consciously chose the top-down view for the print: it reveals the structure of the tree and draws the eye to the lines, branches, and voids that appear almost like a graphic drawing from this perspective. The limited bonsai art print is handcrafted in Zurich using screen printing. Several overlapping layers of ink create a distinct sense of depth. In Lake Tai near Suzhou in China, one can find stones of extraordinary shape: perforated, craggy, and with bizarre silhouettes. Over long periods of time, they have been shaped by the power of water and erosion into small sculptures of nature. Some resemble mountains, animals, or human figures, while others leave plenty of room for one's own imagination. In Chinese, these special stones are called "Gongshi." They were traditionally collected by scholars and placed on desks, in interior spaces, and in gardens. This was not only about their material value, but about the conscious contemplation of their forms and the thoughts they trigger.Since the Ming Dynasty, viewing stones have been part of this Chinese tradition of collecting and contemplation. To this day, they are cherished as precious collector's items and meditation stones. "Viewing Stones" presents these works of natural art as an invitation to take time and sink into one's own thoughts for a moment. The large-format, limited-edition art prints are screen-printed by hand in Zurich. From the outside, they may look like ordinary stones. Only a cut reveals what has been hidden inside for millions of years: layers of minerals, vibrant colors, fine lines, and sometimes entire crystal landscapes. A stone can hold an entire world within itself. Many of these structures form in cavities within the rock. Mineral-rich liquids penetrate small cracks and hollows, depositing new minerals layer by layer over long periods of time. This is how the characteristic bands and patterns of agates are created. The shapes and colors that develop depend, among other factors, on the composition of the minerals and the conditions during their formation.Only through cutting and polishing does this hidden world become visible. Each cross-section tells its own geological story. Sometimes it resembles a landscape, sometimes an abstract drawing."Mountain Treasures" showcases these hidden inner worlds: images born of minerals, water, and time, shaped by the slow forces of the earth. The large-format, limited-edition art prints are hand-screenprinted in Zurich. This series of limited edition art prints was created for our exhibition "Into Mountains: Wear Your Mirror" at the Musée des beaux-arts Le Locle (MBAL). The works are part of an installation that emerged from our book of the same name, "Into Mountains".The book and exhibition explore the rituals and protective signs that people in ancient China used before venturing into the mountains. During the Chinese Jin Dynasty (265–420 AD), mountains were not just landscapes, but also places filled with unknown forces, deities, and dangers. Those who entered this world did not do so without preparation.Building on these historical concepts, "Into Mountains" addresses the changing relationship between humans and nature. What was once experienced as a powerful and sometimes threatening world outside human control is now often viewed as a resource to be used and exploited. The works combine historical concepts with a contemporary examination of our relationship with nature. The large-format art prints are limited to 10 copies each and are individually screen-printed by hand in Zurich. Multiple overlapping layers of color create a unique sense of depth and give the prints an intense luminosity.
