Large-format art print Bonsai

In 2023, we were invited by Studio@Ding to a residency at their bonsai collection in Suzhou, China. During this stay, the idea for this limited art print was born, depicting a bonsai from an unusual perspective: from above.

From this top-down view, branches and boughs become visible that are otherwise hidden in the dense foliage. The curved lines and clearly defined shapes are the result of decades of care. Through regular pruning and targeted restriction, the tree's growth is guided and its characteristic form is maintained.

The bonsai thus uniquely illustrates how natural growth and human design intertwine. The tree grows under its own power, while humans intervene time and again, allowing certain branches to grow while removing others, thereby shaping the form over many years. This creates a delicate balance between control and growth.

Engaging with the bonsai collection in Suzhou has sharpened our perspective on this relationship between human and nature. We consciously chose the top-down view for the print: it reveals the structure of the tree and draws the eye to the lines, branches, and voids that appear almost like a graphic drawing from this perspective.

The limited bonsai art print is handcrafted in Zurich using screen printing. Several overlapping layers of ink create a distinct sense of depth.
